Healthcare Technology and News: Tata Consultancy Services Unveils New Business Intelligence Solution for Healthcare Industry

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a leading IT services provider, unveiled Provider Performance Insight, a software solution built on SAP BusinessObjects Xcelsius software and TCS’ healthcare analytics framework (hBIDS), for hospitals and other healthcare providers.

SAP BusinessObjects Xcelsius is an intuitive and robust tool set with rich analytic capabilities. It is an ideal solution for healthcare providers to enhance visibility into their patient care and business operations, officials said.

The hBIDS framework has a comprehensive list of performance indicators covering most of the operational and clinical areas of a hospital, including customer care and  satisfaction, resource utilization, staff satisfaction, staff utilization, clinical outcomes, and financial measurements.

Hospitals typically do not embark on end-to-end data warehousing and analysis, mainly due to perceived higher costs, complexity and long gestation period. The new solution from TCS simplifies the projects, reduces costs and shortens time to value related to both hospital administration and patient care, officials said.

TCS’ Provider Performance Insight can be deployed in three to five months, whereas typical business intelligence projects in other industries take up to 12 months for initial results and up to 18 months for completion. TCS’ new solution provides end-to-end solutions for both administrative and clinical processes to enhance patient services and improve strategic decision making.

The Provider Performance Insight solution provides a snapshot of patient care delivery activities, effective performance evaluations of patient service, ability to optimize staffing levels to reduce overall cost, power to track and trend staffing ratios over multiple periods, real-time assessment of overall financial status, and ability to compare revenue across peer organizations or departments.

According to Debashis Ghosh, head of Life Sciences and Healthcare at TCS, the escalating cost of healthcare makes it imperative for all healthcare providers to evaluate efficiencies in every aspect of their business.

“Both patient care and operational effectiveness need to be evaluated, improved and tracked on an ongoing basis and this will be enabled by our solution,” Ghosh said in statement.

John Papandrea, senior vice president and global healthcare sector head, SAP, commented that SAP’s vision for healthcare is to provide applications that support the ability of healthcare provider organizations to focus on improving quality, helping maintain or reduce costs, and increasing transparency of the quality of care that is provided to consumers.

Recently, TCS has been selected as a winner of Verizon’s 2008 Supplier Excellence Award (SEA) in the IT Services category. The award recognizes companies that support Verizon’s commitment to continuous improvement of quality and service to its customers through a passion for excellence.
