Pegasystems Announces APIs for Better Exchange of Patient Information

The healthcare industry generates a massive amount of data across the entire line of the service delivery. And in most cases, these data sets are stored in separate silos, which makes them that much more difficult to access in order to gain a comprehensive view of each patient. The new Pega FHIR APIs, created by Pegasystems, are connectors that have been designed to specifically break down existing data silos so payers and providers can securely gain access to patient information to deliver improved services.

In addressing the challenges of siloed information, Susan Taylor, vice president and business line leader, healthcare, Pegasystems, said, “Many healthcare organizations still struggle to overcome organizational siloes, which prevents them from having full visibility into patients' data across the care continuum. These new connectors enable Pega clients to access a broader ecosystem of information that drives better health, administrative, and financial outcomes. With Pega FHIR APIs, care teams are empowered to improve collaboration and transform the quality of care for patients.”

The Pega FHIR APIs are part of the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standards framework created by the Health Level Seven International (HL7). The HL7 was established in 1987 as a not-for-profit organization to develop standards of a comprehensive framework for the management, delivery and evaluation of health services with support of clinical practice for the exchange, integration, sharing and retrieval of an electronic health information system.

Pegasystems develops applications to streamline critical business operations for marketing, sales, services and operations to better connect enterprises to their customers in real-time across different channels. The solutions it provides are built on its unified Pega 7 platform available in the cloud or on-premises with visual tools so the applications can be adapted as needed depending on demand.

Any of the FHIR-compatible applications from different vendors can be integrated with Pega FHIR APIs out of the box with easy configuration. After the Pega APIs are configured and installed, organizations are able to access patient information without having to create integration solutions with existing clinical systems manually, as with legacy solutions. According to Pega, this will give members of the healthcare industry a seamless, patient-centric care and service.

Some of the key features of the Pega FHIR APIs are pre-configured REST connect integration rules for select resources based on FHIR Standard; pre-configured integrated data model supporting the APIs; and pre-configured data pages supporting each API.

With these APIs, providers and payers will be able to create personalized care and payment systems by comparing information from databases, which includes medical history, patient context, real-time data from connected medical devices and being able to determine if the insurance covers a particular procedure.
