Frost & Sullivan Awards Brainlab for Buzz O.R. Software

Global consulting firm Frost & Sullivan recently awarded Brainlab the 2014 European Frost & Sullivan Award for Customer Value Leadership for its Buzz operating room integration software. Buzz provides operating room technicians with access to patient records, images, live video feed and recording capabilities, and software integration, among other capabilities.

According to Biz Journals, F&S provided Brainlab with the award for its software's ability to provide surgeons with an efficient workflow environment that helps hospitals contend with a growing number of surgical procedures and decreased number of staff. F&S Research Analyst Shruthi Parakkal commented on the nature of the software as a whole and Brainlab's involvement with the medical community.

“Buzz is easily adaptable, as its flexible modular configurations are designed to fit the needs of any O.R.,” Parakkal said.

“Brainlab has developed close relations with the medical community and incorporates their feedback during the development of product prototypes,” she continued. “Brainlab has developed close relations with the medical community and incorporates their feedback during the development of product prototypes.”

A Brainlab's introduction video describes specific capabilities of the Buzz system. The narrator interacts with the system, first showing how a surgeon can load patient data by having Buzz access hospital databases. It can bring up images relevant to procedures the surgeon must perform, such as those that require work on a patient's head.

Buzz is capable of displaying both 2D and 3D images, and it lets surgeons manipulate those images in various ways. In the case of a 2D cross-section of a skull, for instance, the surgeon can scroll through successive cutouts of the affected body. Surgeons also may look a 3D representation of that same skull and move the image on the screen on all three axis. Buzz allows the surgeon to take that 3D image and crop it to better visualize the patient's anatomy.

In addition, Brainlab's sofware allows for recording and streaming of video while surgeries are taking place. Buzz is network-based, and it allows other hospital professionals to view such live streams on any hospital computer as they take place. Any surgeon can review or share his or her work after the surgery is complete. The system has an iPhone docking station, and it can sync with other Brainlab products to create a more integrated surgical room overall.

F&S gifts the Customer Value Leadership award to one company each year which creates value for its customers while placing a premium on return on investment. The Brainlab Academy provides training for the Buzz system to teach surgeons proper use of its workflow software and, by association, provides hospital patients with optimal care.
