Preva Makes Its Fitness API More Available

Precor, which is known for manufacturing fitness equipment, is making available its Preva application programming interface (API) to developers, so that they can develop additional software to be integrated with the data collected through the Preva API. The new Preva Developer Portal will allow developers to create contests for its users, noting the user’s achievements based on the collected data, such as a badge system to highlight achievements on Facebook or Twitter. The Preva app can be found in more than 1,400 fitness centers globally. Precor is the only fitness provider to offer its API without having to register an account.

Dave Flynt, director of user experience at Precor, says that since Preva’s 2010 launch, it has been providing the industry with what he calls a “wealth of information” on workout habits and trends. Using this data, he says, industry stakeholders are able to “keep a firm grasp on what experiences exercisers are having in the gym, helping them better understand how best to facilitate an exerciser's fitness journey.”  Flynt claims that the company’s data is more accurate than any survey.

One well-known fitness reward app, EveryMove, can be linked to a Preva account to monitor a user’s progress and apply it towards discounts and rewards offered through the EveryMove system. Another app, Runkeeper, will monitor a workout on Precor machines and give feedback as to how many calories have been burned.

The chief executive officer of EveryMove, Russell Benaroya, says, “Like Precor, EveryMove is in the business of helping people improve themselves.” By integrating with Preva, he says that the company has been able to help those who exercise record their workouts, enabling them to earn rewards from popular brands, their employer, their healthcare provider, and even their gym. He says, “It is this positive association between working hard and being rewarded that will drive long-term change across the large portion of exercisers who strive to meet their fitness goals."
