Kansas Hospital Association Joins with Career Network to Help Healthcare Employers Find Professionals

The Kansas Hospital Association (KHA) has partnered with the National Healthcare Career Network (NHCN), an integrated alliance of nearly 300 recruiting career centers of professional associations, to connect healthcare employers in Kansas with access to more than two million specialized candidates in 13 disciplines, according to a press release.

The disciplines include nurses, allied health practitioners, operations experts, physicians and academic/research professionals.

“Based on national surveys, hospitals in Kansas rank among the highest in the country for patient satisfaction, and KHA is committed to helping them maintain that distinction through strategic talent acquisition,” said Cindy Samuelson, KHA vice president of member services and public relations. “As part of the NHCN, we can provide them with the option of staying local in their talent searches, or expanding their searches to national pools of qualified candidates.”

It’s not a small order. A 2010 Association of American Medical Colleges study found that the nation was short almost 14,000 physicians, and by 2025, that gap might reach 130,600 physicians.

And Wendy Rigby adds that many of the 900 medical students in her state of Texas currently studying at the U.T. Health Science Center today won’t choose to be a primary care doctor because of the hours and low pay.

Kansas is right in there. The press release notes that nearly 3,000 health care job openings currently exist throughout the state.

Don’t forget: the Affordable Care Act is expected to bring in 20 to 30 million people who are currently uninsured. In New York State, that means 30,000 primary care physicians will have to be hired by 2015, “a task experts say is impossible,” an upstate New York website reported.

“Employers would always prefer to hire from their local markets, but some positions require reach into outside talent pools,” said Carol Barber, managing director of the NHCN. “Partnering with the NHCN allows KHA to empower its members with convenient, one-click access to outstanding candidates near and far. We welcome KHA to our Network and are excited about working together to keep Kansas healthy!”
