Nuance Acquires Webmedx for Transcription, Document Management Services

Nuance Communications Inc., announced today it is acquiring Webmedx Inc., a provider of transcription and editing services and clinical documentation technology for hospitals and clinics, according to a story by Rodney H. Brown at masshightech.com. Terms were not disclosed.

According to a press release, Brown reports, Webmedx will integrate its Webmedx’s Quality Analytics application with Nuance Transcription Services, “based on natural language processing, with Nuance’s clinical language understanding systems.”

What Webmedx will provide for Nuance is a technology that turns physician dictation into clinical documentation that can be used for patient care, and content for electronic health record applications, according to a story at businessweek.com.

Webmedx’s customers include more than 100 hospitals including Bon Secours and Catholic Healthcare West, according to officials, as reported in the story.  Nuance will also acquire from Webmedx its Medical Technology Education Center, a school that teaches speech recognition editing and medical transcription school over the Web, according to Brown’s story.

Other companies recently acquired by Nuance include Equitrac Corp. of Plantation, Fla., ($157 million in May), a provider of print management and cost recovery software and SVOX AG, a Swiss speech software company, which Nuance acquired in June for an undisclosed amount.

Nuance revealed last month in a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing that its gross debt was $900 million at the end of March, and that the company hopes to extend term loans that come due in 2013.
